Questions for cleaning bare sheet-metal ducts

Start with the condition, not the sales package

Bare sheet metal is more tolerant of controlled mechanical cleaning than fragile liner, but the method still needs limits. Sharp screws, seams, dampers, turning vanes, flexible connectors, and sealants can be damaged by tools pushed blindly through a run.

EPA describes controlled brushing with contact vacuuming and careful resealing of access openings. Ask how the provider will identify obstructions, collect loosened material, protect joints, and avoid applying an internal coating unless a separate, fully explained decision supports it.

What deserves a closer look

Surface condition

Light adhered dust does not automatically justify work. Ask for evidence of excessive deposits, contamination, or actual particle release.

Hidden features

Dampers, sensors, acoustic sections, and transitions can catch or be damaged by agitation tools. The system map should note them.

Access closure

Cut openings should receive durable mechanical closures and appropriate sealing, not a casual patch that leaks after the visit.
