Flexible duct needs material-aware handling

Review physical damage, then connect the observation to its source, system location, and a written scope.

Start with the condition, not the sales package

Flexible duct usually has a thin inner liner supported by wire and surrounded by insulation and an outer jacket. Crushing, tearing, kinking, pest damage, or water can compromise it. Aggressive brushes can cause damage that is harder to see from the room.

EPA notes that soft-bristled tools can be used carefully on some flexible duct, while replacement may be more economical for accessible damaged runs. Ask for photos, material identification, and a comparison of careful cleaning with replacement. System modification may trigger contractor or permit questions that standalone cleaning does not.

What deserves a closer look

Physical damage

Kinks, compression, tears, disconnected collars, and sagging can restrict airflow or draw contaminants. Cleaning will not restore the geometry.

Wet insulation

Moisture in the outer insulation or liner calls for source correction and material evaluation. Dry-looking exterior jacket is not proof that the assembly is sound.

Tool limits

The provider should state brush softness, travel distance, and how the inner liner will be inspected afterward.

Move from observation to a written decision

  1. Request context photos

Include collars, supports, jacket, and the affected run.

  2. Identify the defect

Separate deposits from tears, crushing, disconnection, or wet material.

  3. Compare repair paths

Ask for written cleaning, repair, and replacement options where appropriate.

  4. Verify the finished run

Check support, bend radius, connection, insulation, and airflow after work.
