MERV describes how a filter performs across particle-size ranges under a test method. A higher rating can improve particle capture, but it can also add resistance if the filter area, depth, rack, and blower are not suited to it. Official smoke guidance often mentions MERV 13 or higher with the important condition that the system can safely accommodate it.
Ask a qualified HVAC professional or consult manufacturer information before changing filter type. Filter fit and actual airflow matter. A crushed filter or a bypass gap can defeat the purpose of a higher rating.
